Renal artery stenosis refers to a condition in which the arteries that feed blood to the kidneys become narrowed. This can significantly increase blood pressure. The vast majority of cases of renal artery stenosis are caused by atherosclerosis. Renal artery stenosis is caused less often by a condition called fibromuscular dysplasia. This condition leads to unusual growth of cells on the interior walls of the renal arteries.
