Osteoporosis is a condition that signifies thinning bones. Loss of protein and calcium lead to weakened bones that are more prone to fracturing. Postmenopausal women are at increased risk of developing osteoporosis due to decreased estrogen levels. Certain medications increase osteoporosis risk, including steroids, antidepressants, chemotherapy, excess thyroid hormones, and others.

In addition to bone breaks, osteoporosis can significantly impair bone function and contribute to deformity. Osteoporosis is diagnosed via bone density testing. Bisphosphonate medications are the most common treatment for osteoporosis.
