MATHia en Español

Because all math learners deserve every chance to excel.

Is MATHia available in Spanish?

We're excited to announce that, yes, it is!

I’m a cognitive scientist at Carnegie Learning and a former high school teacher. In my current role, I help to design, develop, and constantly improve our MATHia workspaces. I am passionate about education and am very fortunate to work on MATHia, which is a truly outstanding resource for teachers and students. MATHia is especially effective in closing the achievement gap for struggling readers and underperforming students, and I'm proud to be part of a company that is committed to reaching underserved student populations.

Now Available in Spanish

In this vein, I am so excited that our award-winning MATHia software is now available in Spanish! This is a hugely important milestone for us. Carnegie Learning’s mission is to help students learn to love math and achieve academic success.

Providing a Spanish language option helps us to better serve an important segment of our student population. In 2018, the National Center for Educational Statistics reported that there were 3.8 million public school students for whom Spanish was their primary language at home. This represents nearly 8% of all public school students!

We are so proud to be able to make our content more accessible to Spanish-speaking students and their families, and hope we can work with schools to narrow some stubborn achievement gaps between native English speakers and English language learners.

Behind the Scenes

To give a little insight into our process, we have been working with a team of dedicated and talented individuals across Latin America to translate our workspaces, test them, and continuously improve them. Translating mathematical content is a special challenge, and we have had a lot of animated (and yes, very geeky!) conversations about the best way to translate mathematical terms.

For example, the word “whole” doesn’t have a single correct translation—it might be “unidad,” “entero,” or “todo” depending on the context, and we’re taking care to ensure we have the right meaning for each use case. We’ll continue to have these conversations and are eager to involve our customers in this process.

We have also spent time on other finishing touches, such as a higher frequency of common Latinx names in word problems. We know that subtle modifications like these can improve students’ achievement and motivation.

¡Vamos!

Since this is our first release of MATHia in Spanish, we know it won’t be perfect right away, and we are committed to continuous improvement so we can deliver the same outstanding educational experience you’ve come to expect from MATHia to our Spanish-speaking students. We hope to hear from you about how things are going.

¡Deseamos que sea de su agrado!
