Culture Corner: The School Year around the World

The 2020-21 school is almost over in the U.S., but when does the school year end internationally?

Another school year is wrapping up! While this year probably felt like the longest school year ever, how does the your school compare to schools in other countries around the world?

 

China

The school year in China typically runs from the beginning of summer to mid-July. Their school day is from around 7:30 am to 5:00 pm, with a two-hour lunch break during the day.

In Kenya, students go to school from around 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, plus they have a half day on Saturdays. The school year begins in January and goes until November. Students get breaks during the months of April, August, and December.

Costa Rica

In Costa Rica, students typically go to school from February to December, with some vacation in July. Students are required to wear a uniform to school. Costa Rica is one of the top countries to invest in their public education system with about 7% of their GDP going to education.

Japan

Most schools in Japan operate on a trimester schedule, with the first trimester starting in April and going to mid-July. Students get breaks between the trimesters in the summer, fall, and spring. Japanese students go to school approximately 230 days a year.
