4 Great Strategies for Telling Your School’s Story

Here's how to share what you're most proud of.

Megaphone

Trish Rubin, author of BrandED: Tell Your Story, Build Relationships and Empower Learning, recently wrote in District Administration about the 4 Cs that can help education leaders branch out, drive new innovation in their schools and districts, and share what they're doing with the world.

  1. Context. Rubin shares the importance of thinking about your exchanges with the world and optimizing the wealth of information available to you. She writes, "Look beyond the wall of your school to learn and promote trends, topics, ideas, thoughts and research."

  2. Customers. She shares the example of a middle school principal in Toronto who not only reaches out to parents of current students, but also connects with families who are planning to move to the neighborhood. Community engagement can be a powerful tool, and making connections with the parents of your students will strengthen buy-in, engagement and learning.

  3. Competition. Rubin notes that "All district leaders face competition for budgets, resources and support," but partnering with other schools and districts can be a great strategy for growth and improvement.

  4. Capabilities. A technical high school in New York City is building student capabilities by providing internship opportunities and requiring public speaking courses. How can you make sure you're building student capabilities in areas they'll need for a successful future?
