New Year, New Book: Middle School Teacher Stephanie Sablich

The brand new Carnegie Learning Middle School Math Solution textbooks are in classrooms and we're asking what teachers have to say about the new book (and its new look!)

You previously met Stephanie Sablich, a 7th and 8th grade math teacher at Liberty Junior High School who is using the new Carnegie Learning Middle School Math Solution textbook with her students this fall. We followed up with Stephanie to see how things are going in Burbank, Illinois.

Real World Math

"One of my favorite lessons is 'Math Football: Using Models to Understand Integer Addition' because of the real-world application. I usually preface the lesson with a discussion of the recent Chicago Bears game, which gets the students interested in the activity and the connection between football and math. The students also get excited when I tell them they are going to play a game.

As the students play, I walk around and ask each pair guiding questions to help deepen their understanding of integers. The lesson is very engaging and gets the students excited about learning. As they play the game, all conversations are on-task and the pairs are productive. Students often use the football field throughout the topic because it provides a visual representation for the addition and subtraction."
