3 Easy Ways to Meet Your Professional Learning Needs

How to Build Your Own Professional Learning Community (PLC)

Looking for a math community to call home? (Don't worry - we'll have some exciting news for you in the coming weeks!)

Until then, there are a number of ways to start building your own Professional Learning Community (PLC) with resources available right at your fingertips.

Hopefully you're getting quality ongoing professional learning throughout the year to support you and help grow your practice. Even if you are, building a PLC can still be extremely valuable. A PLC connects you with other teachers like you, and allows you flexibility and control over your own experience. You can use it any time throughout the year as you see fit. You're in the driver's seat!

Here are three ways we've seen teachers build powerful PLCs:

You can begin building your professional learning community by taking these three steps below:

1. Join the conversation on Twitter

EdTech: Focus on K-12 recently shared a few highlights from the #edtechchat hashtag, but that's just the beginning. Tune in to the following hashtags to get involved in key conversations happening around math education. (You don't need to follow them all - just check them out and see which ones work for you.)

  • #MTBoS
  • #longlivemath
  • #mathchat
  • #msmathchat
  • #hsmathchat
  • #alg1chat
  • #geomchat
  • #alg2chat
  • #MathEd
  • #EdTech
  • #eLearning

2. Subscribe to your favorite professional learning

There are so many excellent blogs, websites, and newsletters out there that make it easy to get valuable content delivered straight to you. (Of course, we hope you'll include the LONG + LIVE + MATH Blog and Newsletter in your list!)

3. Connect with colleagues.

They can be an incredible resource for ideas, advice, and support. Remember that you have them available (usually just down the hall!) to work through things with you.

Any other ideas for building a PLC? What's worked best for you in your own professional development? Tell us on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
