15 Interactive K-12 Math Activities Using Number Lines

These free number line activities show how K -12 math is all connected.

Two elementary school girls in a math classroom playing with building blocks on a table. Raise your hand if you remember building colorful block towers and singing "1, 2, 3, 4, 5" in kindergarten!

Those seemingly simple games launch our students’ incredible journey into the world of math.

But as they advance, grasping complex math concepts can feel like scaling Mount Everest in flip-flops. Too often, students don’t see how new lessons connect to previous knowledge.

That's where the magic of a connected K-12 math curriculum comes in.

Introducing the Make Math Connect Activity Packs

A connected K-12 math curriculum helps students see how math concepts build on one another over time. One great way to reinforce this is with math activities that are intentionally designed to build on previously learned knowledge.

Access free activities that do this by downloading the Make Math Connect packs.

These engaging activities, pulled from our ClearMath solutions, offer fifteen gameboards or worksheets for every grade from Kindergarten to Algebra 2.  Complete with printable resources and teacher instructions, the Make Math Connect activities are engaging ways to help your students grasp key mathematical concepts and build a long-lasting love for learning math. As a set, they show how math is connected through the number line's various iterations.

Here’s a sneak peek at the math activities you’ll get. Whether you just need the activity for one grade or multiple, we hope you and your students enjoy making math connect.

High School Math on the Move: Number Line Activities for grades 9-12

Algebra 1: Solving Exponential Equations by Graphing

Your students are getting close to driving age–have they started thinking about cars?

This activity is like having a crystal ball—mathematically speaking—to predict depreciation.

Students will estimate the value of a car over time by eyeballing the sweet spot where an exponential function, representing the car's value, meets a flat line, representing its decreasing worth.

This activity also connects to the real world by showing how the rate of depreciation, represented by the mysterious b-value, impacts the car's value over time.

Geometry: Translation Functions

This geometry activity empowers your students to explore translations as directed line segments and translate figures using function notation.

Students will explore translation functions through collaborative problem-solving and discussions, connecting them to real-world scenarios such as moving furniture or planning a road trip.

They'll learn to measure translations, calculate distances, and understand the meaning behind function notation elements. As a result, they'll be confident in their ability to translate figures and solve real-world translation problems, just as they'd decide which route a delivery truck should take!
