We’re honoring School Principals’ Day through the eyes of students.
May 1 is School Principals’ Day, and we thought we'd get the scoop from some of principals' most important coworkers: the students!
We asked kids about principals’ role in a school, and their answers were creative, hilarious, and, sometimes, oddly specific. Here’s what they said.
What would you do if you were the principal for a day?
“On Fridays, I would let kids have 17 minutes of extra recess, only the kids. The 4th graders and 5th graders would get two recesses like everybody else.” -Meredith, 1st grade
“I would have PJ day and a movie, bring snacks, and some recess.” -Max, 6th grade
“I would probably give everyone a break day where they can study or catch up on work or just socialize and do stuff with people as I think people need more breaks.” -Parker, 6th grade
“Let the whole school play video games.” -Cooper, 4th grade
“Let people have 2 minutes of free time on their computers when they get in. And next, if they're finished their work early, then they go on their computer until it's time to dismiss.” -Paul, 1st grade
“I would try to make a MATHstream for younger grades like kindergarten, first, second, third, fourth.” -Sawyer, 3rd grade (whose mom has been working tirelessly on our new video-streaming program, MATHstream)
What do you think principals do at work?
“They probably work very hard on notes, missed absences, and other stuff. They definitely put kids in detention, but I’ve never seen one kid in detention in my life.” -Sawyer, 3rd grade
“I think they sometimes work with people looking at the school or do emails and talk to kids.” -Max, 6th grade
“I have no idea.” -Paul, 1st grade
“I think principals talk to kids who do something bad, make deductions about the school, and host meetings and events in the school.” -Parker, 6th grade
“Work in the office on the computer, walk around the school, he is the leader of the school.” -Meredith, 1st grade
“Paperwork.” -Cooper, 4th grade

As the saying goes, "Out of the mouths of babes.” These kids may not know everything you do to keep your schools humming, but we see and appreciate you!
And who knows, maybe one day, some of these students might re-enter your school as brand new teachers and realize how big of a role you played in making their education so stellar that they’re following in your footsteps. Until then, keep being awesome, principals!
