Williamsburg, KY Maintains Math Scores High above State Averages
Whitley County Middle School has used the Carnegie Learning Middle School Math Solution for the past nine years. Their students have consistently surpassed state averages on the Kentucky Performance Rating for Educational Progress (K-PREP) Test in Math.
After using the Carnegie Learning Middle School Math Solution as part of the RAND study*, Whitley County Middle School saw a dramatic increase in math scores and decided to adopt the program. As a result, their students have consistently surpassed state averages on the Kentucky Performance Rating for Educational Progress (K-PREP) Test in Math, with almost half of their students performing in the “proficient/distinguished” category.
David Gibbins, an 8th grade math teacher, is a fan. “The Carnegie Learning textbooks provide real world applications of 8th grade math content that gives the students a reason to want to learn," he says. "Not once since we've started using Carnegie Learning have they asked the question, 'Where are we going to need this?'
The software provides the practice needed to acquire the math skills being taught, but in a manner different than traditional homework, and engages students that otherwise might not be successful. It also allows the higher-level students to progress at a much faster rate, suitable to their level of understanding.
Our test scores have improved dramatically since we have adopted the Carnegie program—to one of the best in the state—and they continue to grow each year. I was skeptical at first, but after using it and seeing the results, I now would want nothing else.”
